WOOD120/125: Benchtop Basics/Processing Raw Lumber In-Person
Overview
- This 2.5-hour workshop teaches how to use the large stationary woodworking machines in Clear Creek Makerspace. $25 per student ($20 for members).
- This course does not cover the CNC machine. Please register for WOOD150 series for more information about the CNC.
- Partipants will be introduced to each machine, provided operational overview, safety considerations, and have hands-on experience.
- At the end of this course you will receive an email with an access code to the Woodshop Tool Test. Passing this short test is part of the requirement for members to gain personal woodshop access.
- No prior experience needed for this course, all supplies and materials are provided.
- Please wear comfortable well-fitted clothing, close-toed shoes, put your hair up, and be prepared to get a little dirty!
Course Description
This is a combined course that covers the topics in Benchtop Basics and Processing Raw Lumber. You will learn the fundamentals of how to mill raw lumber and safely use the stationary woodworking equipment through hands-on experience. Whether you're a beginner or looking to refine your skills, this workshop covers essential techniques and tools for successful woodworking projects!
As part of the course, you'll learn:
- Making a cut list and calculating board-feet
- Best practices for labeling
- Miter saw for rough cross cuts
- Band saw for rough rip cuts
- Jointing a face and edge
- Planing for square and thickness
- Ripping and cross cuts on a table saw
- How to safetly use a router table
- How to safetly use a drill press
About the Instructor
David is a skilled handyman and fine woodworker with a passion for building, fixing, learning, and teaching. He runs Applewood Handyman as well as Moon Rabbit Woodworker, small businesses where he design-builds custom pieces ranging from hardwood picture frames and flamingo-inspired bent lamination side tables to built-in cabinets and solid wood tabletops. - Arrive on time: Classes start promptly as scheduled out of respect for other students. Late arrivals may be turned away without a refund or rescheduling option.
- Appropriate gear: For safety, please wear proper attire, especially in woodshop or metal shop classes. Review our PPE and safety gear requirements before class.
- Age restrictions: Most classes are geared toward ages 14 and up. Attendees 14-17 must always be accompanied by an adult. Some special events, especially those geared towards young folks, may have different age or attendance requirements.
- Parking: We're located at 9110 W 44th Ave, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033. Parking is available in our lot and the shared lot next to Anderson Pool. Visitors, please use our north entrance.
